Beetle

A beetle, probably Hoplia philanthus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae).  The garden chafer, Phyllopertha horticola, looks similar and is reported to be more common but I think H. philanthus is the better match for these photos.

Caterpillar

A caterpillar of the mullein moth, Cucullia verbasci = Shargacucullia verbasci (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on water figwort (Scrophularia auriculata).  I also saw another on a dark mullein plant (Verbascum nigrum) but that photo wasn't as clear.

Conopid Fly

A Conopid fly, probably Physocephala rufipes (Diptera: Conopidae).  Also on the UK checklist is Physocephala nigra which is similar but not as common.  As with other Conopids, these flies are bee parasites and they lay their eggs between the abdominal plates of live bees.
