Longhorn Beetle

Longhorn beetle Stenurella melanura (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) on a thistle.  This is a male; the females have a broader black band running down the the back.  This species is sometimes still referred to by its older name Strangalia melanura.

Flesh Fly

Initially I assumed that this was another black Tachinid fly, but I was unable to find any Tachinids in which the leading part of the wings was black like this.  Instead, I now think it is the flesh fly Nyctia halterata (Diptera: Sarcophagidae).

Wood Soldierfly

My first wood soldierfly:  Solva marginata (Diptera: Xylomyidae).  It was on ivy that was growing on the stump of a recently felled tree.  There was lots of logs and wood-chips in the area.
