A female snipe fly: Chrysopilus cristatus (Diptera: Rhagionidae). Stubbs and Drake (British Soldierflies and their Allies, 2001) rather misleadingly have this as a 'black species' but the females are distinctly grey. The males, however, are much darker.

A small Tortrix moth, possibly Dichrorampha vancouverana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) on yarrow (Achillea millefolium). [Note added 2012-05-01: There are several other Dichrorampha species listed at UK Moths which look like this, so it is probably best to call it just Dichrorampha sp.]

A medium-sized male horsefly, probably a Tabanus sp, possibly Tabanus bromius (Diptera: Tabanidae). At about 15mm long this was noticably larger than the more common 10mm-long Haematopota pluvialis. The single horizontal dark band on each eye is correct for T. bromius, but a clearer view of the individual facets on the eye would be needed to confirm the species.
