Conopid Fly

A Conopid fly, probably Physocephala rufipes (Diptera: Conopidae).  Also on the UK checklist is Physocephala nigra which is similar but not as common.  As with other Conopids, these flies are bee parasites and they lay their eggs between the abdominal plates of live bees.

Thistle Gall Fly

A female thistle gall fly, probably Urophora stylata (Diptera: Tephritidae).  This fly was on a large robust thistle with long sharp spines and large flower heads.  Presumably the long ovipositor allows the fly to deposit its eggs deep within the flower heads, making it difficult for parasites to get at them.

Longhorn Moths

A male longhorn moth, Nemophora degeerella (Lepidoptera: Adelidae).  The males of this species have antennae which are about 6 times longer than their bodies.  They use these antennae for display when they swarm in woodland clearances:

The females have much shorter antennae (see here).
