Soldier Beetle

Soldier beetle Cantharis rustica (Coleoptera: Cantharidae).  According to Michael Chinery (Complete British Insects, Collins, 2005) the reddish femurs and the black spot on the upper surface of the thorax are what distinguish this species  from several similar soldier beetles.

Photos taken in Whiteknights Park, Reading University grounds, Reading, UK, on 2007-05-19.
