Spider

A female nusery web spider, Pisaura mirabilis (Araneae: Pisauridae).

Tephritid Flies

A pair of Tephritid flies, probably Chaetostomella cylindrica (Diptera: Tephritidae), mating on knapweed (Centaurea sp).

The following photo shows a male with everted pheromone sacs on the sides of the abdomen.  These sacs release a pheromone that attracts females.

Longhorn Moth

A male Adela reaumurella (Lepidoptera: Adelidae). This year these have been nothing like as common as they were at this time last year; so far I have only seen two.

Alderfly

An alderfly, Sialis sp (Megaloptera: Sialidae) laying eggs on a grass stem.

Woodpecker

A greater spotted woodpeck (Dendrocopos major) feeding its young in a nest hole on an oak tree.

I first heard the young twittering but didn't see the nest entrance until the adult flew to it.
