Gall Fly

A knapweed gall fly, Chaeotostomella cylindrica (Diptera: Tephritidae).  I recognize this species by the yellow dog face on the top of its thorax and by the black-outlined translucent yellow bands on the wings.

From back in mid-summer: a grass moth, probably Chrysoteuchia culmella (Lepidoptera: Crambidae).

Crab Spider

A crab spider, probably a Misumena vatia, on a buttercup flower (Ranunculus sp).  The females of this species can be either white or yellow, depending on the colour of the flower they are on.  See here for a white one.

Ichneumon Wasp

A female ichneumon wasp (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) laying an egg in a thistle head.  Note that it is just the ovipositor sheath that is sticking out backwards; the ovipositor itself is separable from the sheath and is being pushed forwards and downwards into the thistle head, probably onto some hapless insect larva or egg.  As I have said before, ichneumon wasps are very difficult to identify to the genus and species level, so I will not even hazard a guess for this one.

Ormyrid Wasp

A female Ormyrid wasp, probably an Ormyrus sp, possibly Ormyrus nitidulus = Ormyrus tubulosus (Hymenoptera: Ormyridae).  See the images by P. Falatico half-way down this page at Alain Ramel's Les Insectes site.
