Sawfly

An Argid sawfly, probably Arge cyanocrocea (Hymenoptera: Argidae).  At first glance similar to several Tenthredinid sawflies, such as Athalia rosae, but the antennae of Tenthredinidae are compose of many small evenly sized segments, while those of the Argidae terminate with single segment which makes up most of the length of the antennae.

Hoverfly

A male Sphaerophoria scripta (Diptera: Syrphidae).  There are several species of Sphaerophoria in the UK, but of them only S. scripta males are recognisable with any confidence from photos with their cylindrical abdomens which are clearly longer than their folded-back wings.  Female S. scripta have more rounded, tapering abdomens but can only be safely distinguished from other Sphaerophororia females if they are caught in the act of mating with S. scripta males.  The other Sphaerophoria species really require microscopic examination for their identification.  In particular, the markings on the abdomen are not a good guide to the species.

Swifts

Today I noticed my first swifts (Apus apus) of the year, swooping around high up, too high for me to hear their calls.

Moth

From last spring: a small moth, probably Esperia sulphurella (Lepidoptera: Oecophoridae).

I came across this moth just a few seconds after photographing this Incurvaria masculella and, initially, I assumed that it must belong to the same species, even though it had only one light spot rather than two.  However, on a closer look, I decided it must be a different species but, even then, it took me nearly a year before I discovered its true species.
