Stiletto Fly

A stilleto fly, probably Thereva nobilitata (Diptera: Therevidae).  When I first saw it I thought it was a hairy kind of snipe fly (family Rhagionidae) but the dark shiny marking between the eyes seems to be a characteristic of female Thereva sp. (see here for further details).

Photos taken in Whiteknights Park, Reading, UK, on 2010-08-03.
