A female hoverfly of the genus Ferdinandea, probably Ferdinandea cuprea (Diptera: Syrphidae).  One of the few UK hoverflies with dark markings on its wings (The only others I can think of at the moment are members of genus Volucella).

Photo taken in Whiteknights Park, Reading University grounds, Reading, UK, on 2010-05-15.
