Vetch

From back in mid-summer: flowers of tufted vetch, Vicia cracca.  When fertilised the flowers develop into seed pods:

Later in the year the pods dry and turn black and the slightest touch causes them burst open, scattering their seeds.

Photos taken in Whiteknights Park, Reading, UK, on 2014-07-20.

More Ladybird Beetles

A variant of Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) with orange-red elytra and only faint black spots.

Here is one with larger spots:

And on this one some of the spots are beginning to merge:

First two photos taken in Whiteknights Park, Reading, UK, on 2012-07-28 and 2012-06-13, respectively. Third photo taken in the field below Chazey Wood, near Caversham, UK, on 2012-10-20.

Ladybird Beetles

A ladybird beetle with almost all-yellow elytra: one of the many colour variants of Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae).

This one has small irregular black spots:

And these two have larger ones:

Note that the strength of the black markings on the white scutum and head (which are white) seem to be unrelated to the size of the spots on the elytra.

First and third photos taken in Whiteknights Park, Reading, UK, on 2013-07-20 and second photo taken in Whiteknights Park on 2010-07-04.

From a holiday up north last year: what I think is water beetle Ilybius ater (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae).
