Green Sawfly

An almost fluorescein-green sawfly, probably Rhogogaster viridis (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae).  Distinguished from the other common green and black sawflies by the green pterostigmas and leading edges of the wings.

Hoverfly with a Transparent Abdomen

A female Melanostoma scalare (Diptera: Syrphidae, order Diptera).  Notice the white eggs that are visible through the sides of its abdomen. See here and here for photos by Brian Valentine that also show this. Incidentally, the halteres seem to be distinctly green in this species.

The following photo shows the same specimen from above:

Longhorn Moth

Another species of longhorn moth: Adela fibulella = Cauchas fibulella (Lepidoptera: Adelidae), characterized by the light patches in the middle of the forewings.  The larvae feed on germander speedwell (Veronica chamaedrys), some flowers of which happened to be in the background of the above photo before I cropped it.

Hoverfly

The hoverfly season is now in full swing with new species appearing almost daily.  This is a female Xanthogramma pedissequum (Diptera: Syrphidae).  I did glimpse one of these on each of my two previous walks around the lakes, but this was the first I managed to photograph this year.

However, I did photograph a male of this species last September; see here.
