Conopid Flies

A pair of Sicus ferrugineus (Diptera: Conopidae) mating.    I hadn't noticed before that the females are sightly larger than the males.

The larvae of these are internal parasites of bumble bees (Bombus sp) and the adult females actual lay their eggs between the abdominal segments of bees in flight.

Another Tachinid Fly

A female Phasia hemiptera (Diptera: Tachinidae) on hemlock water dropwort (Oenanthe crocata).

A few days earlier I had seen a male Phasia hemiptera on this patch of flowers beside the top lake, but it flew off before I could get a photo of it.  On this walk I made a point of checking the same patch of flowers and came across this female.  I also saw another male but again it got way before I could photograph it.

Hoverfly

A female hoverfly of species Leucozona laternaria (Diptera: Syrphidae).  For a male see here.  In the other Leucozona species on the UK checklist, lucorum and glaucia, the scutellum is orange-brown whereas in laternaria it is either all black or black with a yellowish tip.
