Sat 2011-01-15 This moth flew in through our open living room window one warm evening last summer. It is a treble brown spot moth, Idaea trigeminata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae).

Fri 2011-01-14 From yesterday's walk round the lakes: silverleaf fungus (Chondrostereum purpureum) growing on a tree stump.

Thu 2011-01-13 From our summer holiday last year: a green sawfly, probably of the Rhogogaster viridis group (Hymenoptera: Tenthrediinidae). The black markings on the thorax are less heavy than in the R. viridis that I have seen before (see here and here).

Wed 2011-01-12 From last spring: a polypore mushroom, probably a winter polypore (Polyporus brumalis), on a decaying silver birch log.

Tue 2011-01-11 From back last spring: a Tenthredinid sawfly, probably a female Tenthredo maculata (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae).
I say it is probably a female because in male T. maculata the yellow abdominal band is much larger (see near the foot of this page at Alain Ramel's Les Insectes site).
