Tephritid Flies

From back in mid-summer: a female Terellia tussilaginis (Diptera: Tephritidae) on burdock (Arctium sp).

And this is a male and female, also on burdock, from the previous summer.

Tephritid Flies

From back in early summer: a female Urophora stylata (Diptera: Tephritidae) on a thistle (Cirsium sp).

And from the same patch of thistles, a male and female mating:

Blue Mushrooms

Small blue-topped mushrooms, probably oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus), growing on a decaying log.  This is what their gills look like:

Pyralid Moth

Pyralid moth Endotricha flammealis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).  This is a rather drab example of what is a rather variably-coloured species.  Here is a brighter one.

Sulphur Tuft Fungus

What I think is sulphur tuft fungus, Hypholoma fasciculare, growing on a tree trunk.

Within a week of me taking these photos this tree was cut down.  It stood beside one of the main paths through the Wilderness and I had noticed a year ago that one side was so badly decayed that it was probably going to come down sometime soon.  Whenever I walked past it I would always speed up a little to minimize the chance of it falling on me.  But now it's down, the log and branches will be good sites for finding wood-loving flies.
